Solar powered teeth cleaning

The toothbrush – which operates with around the same amount of light as a solar powered calculator – creates a solar powered chemical reaction in the mouth. It has a solar panel at its base that transmits electrons to the top of the toothbrush through a lead wire. These electrons react with acid in the mouth which starts a chemical reaction that can break down plaque and kill bacteria, eliminating the need for toothpaste.

The toothbrush has already been tested in cultures of bacteria that cause periodontal disease and inventor, Dr Kunio Komiyama said: “The brush causes complete destruction of bacterial cells.”

Komiyama – a dentistry professor emeritus at the University of Saskatchewan – first had the idea for a solar powered toothbrush 15 years ago. Together with his colleague Dr Gerry Uswak, he has developed his latest version, the Soladay-J3X, which will be manufactured by the Shiken company of Japan.

The pair is planning to recruit 120 teenagers to test the toothbrush to see how it compares to a normal manual brush. It has already won first prize at the FDI Annual World Dental Conference in Dubai.
